Musher Requirements

Experience

The Tour Musher position requires a minimum of 2 years’ experience driving and caring for sled dogs; Finisher Patches from long distance sled dog races, i.e. Iditarod / Yukon Quest are preferred. Other race history will be considered. In the event no racing history is available, documentation of experience may be established by providing no fewer than four (4) references from members of the “mushing community.” Work experience in the hospitality and tourism industry is desirable.

All employees of Gold Rush Dog Tours, LLC must have and provide current CPR and First Aid or greater credentials, valid for the duration of the operating season, prior to employment. Gold Rush Dog Tours, LLC demands employee dedication to safety, responsibility, and productivity.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Tour Mushers must have the ability to work with dogs and people on a daily basis; specific experience with sled dogs sufficient to anticipate potential problems and or safety issues / concerns and correct them prior to developing is required.

All employees must be able to anticipate potential guest problems and safety issues and concerns and correct them prior to escalating with a proactive approach to problem solving and guest relations. The ability to respond calmly in escalating and / or emergency situations is paramount.

Tour Mushers work independently and with others in a multi-function environment and must be able to think logically, enjoy working with people and animals on a daily basis, be conscientious and reliable. Verbal and nonverbal communication Skills are required with Tour Mushers providing introductory and interpretive presentations for Guests. Working closely with handlers, the Tour Musher must also be a good teacher, mentor, and coach.

Working Conditions

Gold Rush operations are executed in a semi-remote setting with shared housing, living, and dining accommodations. Environments are subject to varied weather and potential periods of isolation without transportation to and from camp. All employees are responsible for maintaining a positive outlook and pleasant attitude.

Reporting Relationships

The Camp Manager is hired by and reports to the General Manager. Mushers, Summer Camp Guides, Handlers, Photographer and Cook report to the Camp Manager. All employee paperwork, payroll, and human resources material is submitted to the Office Manager / Chief Secretary.
