Sled Dog Handler Duties

Sled Dog Handler Duties:

Sled Dog Handlers will be located at the Sheep Creek Camp assisting as needed. The Camp Manager will assign specific tasks as required while assigning non-dog related daily job duties.

Sled Dog Handlers assist Tour Mushers in executing dog cart tours in a safe, responsible, professional and friendly manner for all guests. Sled Dog Handlers will assist in the management and care of all Dogs, ensuring the well being of each individual dog. Sled Dog Handlers assist in ‘trail’ and pen maintenance and cleaning in addition to camp chores as assigned.

Sled Dog Handlers greet arriving Guests, delivering tour and safety information.

Once previous guests have departed, arriving guests are officially received and welcomed to Summer Dog Camp. Following welcome and introductions, the Handler guides Guests through the interpretive program and introduces them to the Tour Musher.

Sled Dog Handlers participate in all camp chores.

Specific Duties:

  • Maintain dog pens, ‘trail’ and all other areas.
  • Receive Guests and guide them to the Tour Musher.
  • Engage with guests throughout their experience.
  • Hand out Puppies for petting 
  • Assist Tour Musher with cart tour.
  • Insure Guest areas are ready for the day.
  • Maintain dog supply inventories.
  • Answer radio / phone as requested by Camp Manager.
  • Participate in Camp Chores as required.
  • Assist in feeding/watering and pen cleaning.
  • Exercise tour training and good judgment while working in camp.
  • Handlers are responsible for assisting Mushers in conducting safe tours.
  • Handlers inspect dogs on a daily basis for general health and fitness including daily feet checks.
  • Harnesses and lines will be replaced and mended as needed.
  • The dog pens will be cleaned at a minimum of 3 times a day with periodic cleaning as required to maintain the cleanest pens possible.
  • A continuous supply of water will be available for dogs.
  • Pens will be maintained, painted and repaired as need.
  • Chains will be checked on a daily basis and repaired as required.
  • Harness dogs as prearranged by the Tour Musher.
  • Assist Tour Mushers with all feeding and cleaning; including early morning.
  • Oversee Guests while Mushers are delivering their talk.
  • Watch for and prevent Guests from activities that might cause them injury.
  • Deliver information to the comprehension level of Guests.
  • Exercise skills to prevent mishaps and any possible Guest injury.
  • Assist other handlers throughout the day as the need arises.
  • Execute other duties as assigned by Management.
